The NIE number on its own
This is purely the identifier — one letter, seven digits, a final letter. Everyone receives one, EU citizen or not. By itself it is simply a number written on a document, nothing more.
The green EU registration — certificate or card format
Citizens of the EU, the EEA and Switzerland who live here are issued a green A4 certificate or a small green card. It shows the NIE number alongside your registered address and confirms you are recorded as an EU resident on the island.
The TIE card
Residents from outside the EU are given a TIE — Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero — a card bearing a photo and fingerprint that displays the NIE number, the type of permit and how long it runs. It is the piece of ID a non-EU resident keeps on them.
In Menorca
From Alaior to Alaior, newcomers rely on us for the number, paper or plastic in Menorca. We prepare every document to the Oficina de Extranjería de Menorca standard so nothing gets sent back.

The green certificate for EU citizens, or the TIE for everyone else. The bare NIE number does not grant residence on its own.
